Friday Mlb Picks

For Friday, I like over 8 runs in the Dodgers/Mets. Here’s why. First, some strong trends in our favor. The Mets are 8-1 over this year playing at home where they are a -100 to -125 favorite. They are 15-3 over for the month of August. The Dodgers are 14-11 over on the road where the total is between 8 and 8.5, and they are 33-26 over against winning teams.

The Dodgers start Brad Penny. On the year he is 14-3 with a 2.59 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP and a batting average against of .245. Solid numbers for sure. His ERA in his last 3 starts is only 2.00. But let’s look at that. In 18 innings, he has allowed 17 hits and 9 walks. His WHIP for those 3 games is a fairly high 1.444. Against the Mets this year he is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA and a batting average against of .265. But those starts were in LA. Over the past 3 years, he has started 3 games at Shea Stadium. He is 0-3 with a 7.56 ERA and a .356 batting average against. Apparently somebody does NOT love New York.

Overall against the Mets in the last 3 years, he is 2-3 with a 4.83 ERA and a .326 batting average against. In his career against the Mets he is 5-10 with a 5.72 ERA and a 1.481 WHIP. And speaking of batting averages against, check out the Mets career batting averages against Penny (each with 8 or more at bats): Green .419; Alou .476; Delgado .316; LoDuca .353; Wright .583; and Easley .375. The Mets are batting .284 over the past 7 days, and they will have their way with Brad Penny tonight.

The Mets go with lefty Oliver Perez. The Dodgers bat .283 against lefties (second best in the NL), avaeraging 4.9 runs per game against them. Perez is 11-8 on the year with a 3.52 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP and a .229 batting average against. BUT, in his last 3 starts, he has allowed 23 hits and 7 walks in 15.2 innings, for an ERA of 7.47 and a WHIP of 1.914. For the entire month of August he is 2-1 but with a 7.06 ERA and a batting average against of .308. He has allowed 3 or more runs in his last 4 starts.

For his career against the Dodgers he is 4-4 with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.412 WHIP. This year he is 1-0 against the Dodgers with a 1.23 ERA, HOWEVER, over the past 3 years, he is 1-4 against the Dodgers, with a 6.92 ERA and a .298 batting average against. The Dodgers are batting a very solid .288 over the past 7 days, and they will take it to Perez tonight.

About the Author

There were less home runs in MLB this season, is that good or bad in your opinion?

Personally, I like that the HR totals are down. I appreciate great pitching, situational hitting and defense more than the home runs.

Its a wonderful thing. It forces teams to play more small ball which makes the game much more exciting. Its not like the home run is no longer a factor either, but the increased stealing and bunting makes all games more exciting for the fan and probably the players as well.
